Project Scorpio’s Specs Finally Revealed
According to a report via Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry released today, Microsoft has finally unveiled the specs for their powerful upcoming console, “Project Scorpio.” Although no official name has been given to the console, it appears as though it will be 30% faster than the current Xbox One. While Sony’s PlayStation 4 Pro is still trying to work out the kinks to consistently reach 4K resolutions, according to specs, it’s looking like Microsoft’s latest upgrade can achieve 4K with ease and a lot more. We’ll give you the rundown of what we know.
As you can see, Microsoft is pulling out all the stops. On mere graphics alone, they are cranking out 40 Radeon cores clocked at 1172MHz, that’s insane. To put that in perspective, the PlayStation 4 Pro has 36 Radeon Cores clocked at 911MHz, respectively. Speaking of “cool” features, in order to dissipate the heat, the Scorpio will feature a vapor-chamber heat sink for the first time. How does it work? Basically, it is a copper vessel that contains ionized distilled water under vacuum. When the heat is absorbed into water, it rises to the heat sink fins where it vaporizes. The heat is then expelled using a centrifugal fan. With that being said, hopefully overheating issues will be a thing of the past.
Upon entering the world of 4K gaming, the Scorpio will give many gamers a chance to experience what games should look like compared that to a high-end gaming PC. It is also interesting to note that with the GPU, CPU and RAM upgrades, gamers will experience a graphics boost on older titles. That means all of your old games (via Xbox Backwards Compatibility) and Xbox One games will look better on Scorpio. So far, no videos have been released showing any games in action but, here’s a picture of Turn 10’s Forza Motorsport running in 4K at 60fps.
As you can tell by the screenshot, the Scorpio is only running at 66.19%. That’s a little more than half of its graphical processing power. What does that mean? It means that games will gradually look a hell of a lot better as time progresses and gaming developers find ways to push the Scorpio to its maximum potential. Needless to say, if you’re going to show off a beautiful game, it might as well be Forza, right?
Those that love using the Xbox DVR feature will come to find that it too will see an upgrade allowing gamers to record in 4K at 60fps in full HDR. Microsoft will also implement a new “retroactive screen capture” feature that will allow you to move through your recorded videos frame-by-frame and take out the best possible shot, without having to pin down the perfect the screenshot button.
